Premiering today on Stereogum, the Church of Budgerigars delivers a new music video for Duchess Says’ single I Repeat Myself off their upcoming album Sciences Nouvelles. The album, a follow up to their well-received effort In a Fung Day T!, is set to be released on Bonsound (Canada) and Slovenly Recordings (rest of the world) on October 14th.

Directed by Philippe Beauséjour, the video expresses Duchess Says’ interpretation of repetition in an original and exacting way. The images force us to live and relive the song’s message, over and over again. Like a visual mantra, the shots are juxtaposed so that the viewer witnesses multiple variations of each repetition.

The album Sciences Nouvelles was recorded at Mountain City Studio by Adrian Popovitch and Joseph Donovan, and at St-Hippolyte by Olivier Maguire. Duchess Says serves up a repertory of moog rock with strong visuals, and their live performance is a force to be reckoned with. Those who have seen their live show can attest to the theatrical mayhem that ensues, including antics reminiscent of those of Jesus Lizard’s David Yow. The band's writing process is generally centered around attempts to musically interpret visual art. The approach blends a freewheeling openness to experimentation with an assuredness of execution. This is possible thanks to the band's experience and to their devotion to uncovering the possibilities at the edges of their music, both on the record and at a live show. Sciences Nouvelles is a great distorted trip that will lead you to a new emotional scientific experiment.

Duchess Says will officially launch their album on October 20th at Cabaret La Tulipe. Tickets are on sale now. The band will soon after hit the road in North America and in Europe with Guerilla Toss, Future Punx and Le Prince Harry.

You can pre-order Sciences Nouvelles now via iTunes and Bandcamp (Vinyl/CD/digital).

You heard Devo in 1985...you’ve heard songs by Suicide. Then you know what Duchess Says sounds like. The songs are short, the game is tight, and the visual aspect is astonishing.

The New York Times

The band are nearly a household name in the Montreal underground, but they still haven't made a name outside of the city which, frankly, is shocking...Their arty synth punk is part Devo, part Black Flag and part B-52's, the kind of skewed pop that only musicians raised on experimental music could make.

Exclaim

Hyped up keys and defiant drums perfectly capture the essence of the '80s on Montreal band Duchess Says' new single "I Repeat Myself."

Noisey

“Negative Thoughts,” a six-minute thunderstorm that builds slowly before unleashing torrents of distorted guitars, crashing drums, sirens, and the dynamo that is singer Annie-Claude Deschenes. You can almost hear her whipping a crowd into a frenzy.
