Following in the footsteps of the Beyoncés and the Frank Oceans of this world (lol), Safia Nolin releases a surprise album today called Reprises Vol.1. The ADISQ winner for Breakthrough Artist of the Year wanted to pay tribute to music from la belle province before she begins to work on her second album of original material. She’s put her own sensitive twist on eight Quebecois classics, from La Chicane, to Céline Dion, to Offenbach. She even revisits Marie Carmen’s Entre l’ombre et la lumière with none other than… Marie Carmen!

These are super well-written songs, sung by great performers and filled with tons of emotion, explains Safia. When a song is just as good once it’s been stripped down, that’s a sign of a great song. The songs were recorded live in studio in September with her longtime collaborator, guitarist Joseph Marchand, and mixed by Mathieu Parisien.

The album Reprises Vol.1 is available today on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music and all other digital platforms, as well as on CD in stores.

Nominated at the ADISQ Gala for Folk Album of the Year and Critics’ Choice Album of the Year, Safia’s Polaris Long-Listed debut album Limoilou was released in September 2015 via Bonsound. The Quebec City singer-songwriter has since won the prestigious 2016 Prix Félix-Leclerc de la chanson and 2016 SOCAN Breakthrough Award. She is also nominated at the Canadian Folk Music Awards for French Songwriter of the Year and at Quebec’s GAMIQ in four categories.

Safia will end 2016 with three sad unplugged Christmas shows on December 14th, 15th and 16th (all three dates are sold-out) at the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, located in Old Montreal. On the menu will be Christmas songs (obviously), songs off of Limoilou and covers from her surprise album. Her tour will resume in 2017.
