Nominated for Album of the Year - Hip-hop and Album of the Year - Critics’ Choice at this year’s L’Autre Gala de L’ADISQ, Montréal $ud by Dead Obies is now available on CD in stores and on their online boutique. First released on vinyl and in digital format in November of 2013, the post-rap band’s debut album also made it onto the 2014 Polaris Music Prize Long List. For more than a year, MCs Snail Kid, 20some, Yes Mccan, O.G. BEAR and RCA and producer VNCE have garnered numerous accolades: six nominations at this year’s GAMIQ, multiple rave reviews for their album, and high praise for their shows from international media such as Noisey and NME.
To mark Montréal $ud’s first anniversary, Dead Obies will release on Wednesday, November 12th a book of the same title, designed to be a companion to the album. A group of rappers who use joual, slang and Creole patois are publishing a book, surprising, right? Even the sceptics will be proven wrong, as the saying goes.
The proverbial stations of the cross by six young Jesus figures as they travel from the suburbs (Montréal-Sud, Longueuil's original name) to the big city are demystified over more than a hundred pages. In addition to a glossary of terms used by the band, the book talks about the Dead Obies’ journey and the production of Montréal $ud, while dissecting the lyrics of the album’s 17 songs.
Having won a cash prize awarded by CKOI 96.9 for the best showcase at the 2014 Rendez-vous Pros des Francos, Dead Obies will be off to conquer France in December, where they will perform in seven cities, including Paris and Rennes (at the Trans Musicales). In the meantime, be sure to catch them on November 21st at the SAT during M for Montreal.
