Safia Nolin writes her music with a beautiful spontaniety, constantly exploring the multiple opportunities around her. Drawing inspiration from her environment and general human nature, her songs will often reflect her own life experiences. Her genuine, touching lyrics and haunting melodies guide us through her unique universe.
I write everything that comes in my mind, no matter the state of mind I’m in, explains the 23 year-old singer-songwriter. Intuition is key, since I’ve never taken any music lessons, but also because I want my music and songs to reflect a certain “truth”, like you see in cinéma-vérité.
Safia recorded the album’s 13 tracks at the Mayk Music studio in Morin Heights with producer Philippe Brault, her pal since the 2012 Festival International de la Chanson de Granby. Joseph Marchand (Forêt), who accompanies her in concert, Rick Haworth and Stefan Schneider (Bell Orchestre, Thus Owls, The Luyas) also perform on the album. Surrounded by her talented musician friends in a safe studio environment, the young artist was able to freely express her emotions, turning those five studio days into a life-changing experience.
In 2012, Safia Nolin wrote her first original song, Igloo, inspired by her former neighborhood in Quebec City, Limoilou. During her performance at the 44th edition of Festival International de la Chanson de Granby, she won the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for that song. Since then, Safia’s raw talent and sensibility has spread quickly among the Quebec artistic community. She has toured throughout Quebec and performed at festivals such as M for Montreal, POP Montreal and the FrancoFolies de Montréal. She recorded a song with rapper Koriass for his new album, with whom she’s performed live several times. She has also opened for many artists, including Les soeurs Boulay, Coral Egan, Pierre Lapointe, Philémon Cimon and Groenland.
