During the production of their three sold-out shows at Phi Centre in October, Dead Obies shot a 21-minute documentary about the creation of Gesamtkunstwerk. This second album was recorded in part in studio and in part in front of a live audience at Phi Centre. The documentary Dead Obies in Gesamtkunstwerk: ein dokumentarfilm is streaming now on YouTube.
The album Gesamtkunstwerk will be released on March 4th via Bonsound. It’s available now for pre-order on Bandcamp and iTunes.
For the new album, Dead Obies wanted to tailor their songs for the live performance. We wanted to make an album where the sentiments show through the execution and production of the work rather than only through the lyrics, explains the band. The themes (commitment, the balance of power between truth and falsehood, the notion of individuals connecting around spectacle, etc.) are explored through multiple mediums; from the recording (in concert and in studio) to the album’s commodification, each step of the production is scrutinized so that everything points towards a cohesive discourse. We find ourselves with an album where the music is at the forefront and fulfills its principle purpose: to unite.
The Montreal launch show will take place at Le National on Thursday, March 10th. For the occasion, Dead Obies will be backed by musicians from Kalmunity, Canada's largest and longest running improv music collective, who also took part in the live recording at Phi Centre. MCs Snail Kid, 20Some, Yes McCan, O.G. Bear, RCA and producer VNCE will then perform shows in various cities in Quebec.
