Here’s another surprise after the release of Reprises Vol.2 last Friday: Safia Nolin drops her EP xX3m0 $0ng$ 2 $!nG @L0nG 2Xx today via Bonsound. A gift for the myspace generation, the new EP includes four emo covers. I finally understand, after many years, that my obsession with sad music comes from my background as an emo teenager in high school, tells Safia. I basically spent years listening to sad music, being a bum with friends and scaring folks at the shopping centre.
On xX3m0 $0ng$ 2 $!nG @L0nG 2Xx, Safia pays homage to this musical genre and scene that molded her into the artist she is today. She recorded versions of emo hits from My Chemical Romance, Billy Talent and Paramore. Accompanied by John K. Samson (the Weakerthans, Propagandhi), Safia tackles Cute Without the E, a classic emo song from Long Island’s Taking Back Sunday that helped popularize the genre. These covers bid sayonara to the genre’s usual electric guitars, bass and drums, in exchange for acoustic guitars and an autoharp, which highlight the beauty and melancholy of these songs.
The EP xX3m0 $0ng$ 2 $!nG @L0nG 2Xx is available on all music services now.
Safia Nolin will celebrate the release of xX3m0 $0ng$ 2 $!nG @L0nG 2Xx and Reprises Vol.2 with two special shows at POP Montreal on September 25-26th at Club Balattou. Guests Elisapie, Antony Carle and the one and only Gabrielle Destroismaisons will join her on stage. Launch shows will also take place in Ottawa on October 18th at The 27 Club and in Toronto on October 19th at The Monarch Tavern.
xX3m0 $0ng$ 2 $!nG @L0nG 2Xx and Reprises Vol.2 follow Dans le noir, Safia's second LP of original songs, released less than a year ago, and nominated at this year's ADISQ Gala for Folk Album of the Year. Since it dropped, Safia has shared the Patrick Watson duet Mélancolie, the new track Claire, a video for Dagues starring drag queen Verona Verushka, while also performing over 50 concerts in Canada and France, including a headlining show on the Francos de Montréal’s main stage. Recently, she unveiled a breathtakingly gorgeous video for the bilingual Lesbian Break-up Song (feat. La Force), in collaboration with Bien à vous and The Womanhood Project.
